A Boy’s first computer. A country boy from Hokkaido, Hideki arrives in the big city (Tokyo) to go to college. Instantly, he is shocked and amazed by the variety and prevalence of Persocoms: personal computers designed to look and act like animals or even people! Too poor to afford one of his own, Hideki is overjoyed to discover a discarded Persocom in a trash heap. However, this gift of fate turns into a mystery as his Persocom, Chii, appears to be able to operate without her OS...well, sort of. Hideki has to teach her pretty much everything, with comedic results.
Herself the Elf sez: I was dreading Chobits, as I've seen soooooo many Chii costumes that I was pretty much pre-programmed with a dislike for the show. And I really wasn't looking forward to yet another insipid, misogynistic robot maid show. But I was surprised--it wasn't that bad at all and I found myself getting interested despite my prejudices.
The art and animation are clean and nice-looking with good colours. As for Chii, she *is* cute. But she's also the size of an 11-year-old and completely brainless. The perfect girlfriend--pretty, blonde, devoted, and dumb as a post. I found the fact that she looks like a child disturbing, especially in light of how Hideki has to activate her...o.o;; As for Hideki, I find him a bit annoying. He's a carbon-copy of every other anime romantic-comedy protagonist--a geeky guy who nosebleeds and spazzes at every opportunity. I am so sick of dorky progatonists who are so repressed they can't deal with the very word 'underwear'...get over yourself, man. He doesn't ruin the show for me, but I would have liked to see a guy with some...well, balls.
One thing that struck me as bizarre is how everybody in the show keeps saying that Persocoms are just computers, they're just tools, they're not for sexual purposes. People keep mocking Hideki for being attracted to persocoms, as if it's bizarre and perverted. So if they're not sexbots, why the hell are they dressed up like French Maids and hookers and other tiny sexy outfits? That story just doesn't fly with me, sorry. If they're sexbots, at least have the honesty to own up to it.
The story is catchy and well-paced, and despite some not-stellar characters, it's well-written and draws you in. I wouldn't mind seeing more Chobits--I'm told that Chii gets a brain eventually, which may improve things.
