Yu Yu Hakusho

(aka Poltergeist Report)

Rating: 3 Rampages the guys

Synopsis:
Yusuke Urameshi, a 14-year-old juvenile delinquent, is killed when he tries to save a small child from being hit by a car. Right after he dies, Yusuke meets up with Botan who guides recently passed on spirits into the Spirit World. She brings him to Ko-Enma, the son of the Lord of the Spirit World. Ko-Enma grants Yusuke's resurrection for a price. Yusuke must now work for Ko-Enma as a Spirit Detective. Being a Spirit Detective entails recovering stolen Spirit World artifacts, battling demons who've escaped from Ma Kai and generally looking into supernatural phenomena. Ko-Enma assigns Botan as Yusuke's assistant.
Even before his first case, Yusuke joins up with a long-time rival, Kuwabara and they eventually become good friends. While working for Ko-Enma, Yusuke encounters Kurama and Hiei, two demons who also end up as his comrades. He then meets Genkai, a master of Rei-Kou-Hadou-Ken. Her training and many fights with demons gradually make Yusuke stronger. As his powers increase, he and his friends run into more and more trouble. Eventually they are challenged to fight in a demonic martial-arts tournament. After this tournament, they are faced with the problem of an ex-Spirit World detective trying to open up a gateway between the Human World and the Demonic World. After that, things pretty much wrap up.

Review:
Plagued with the same problem as Yawara and Rurouni Kenshin (namely the ridiculous length), you’d be hard pressed to find the later episodes of even the first season of this action-packed series. Excellent art for a TV series; the story is very unique (a ghost police force?) and the characters play well off each other. Definitely worth checking out. Note: both Yu Yu Hakusho movies have recently been released in North America, so go check them out!
