Living on a small backwater planet, Gene usually makes his living as a bodyguard; barring that, working on someone's broken down hover-truck. Though wanting to go up into the stars to fight pirates, he knows he would never be able to...until he and Jim take up a bodyguard job, only to find that they are in for more than they bargained for when their client (a mysterious Outlaw called "Ice Queen Hilda") "acquires" a special item that some very well-armed and angry pirates are determined to retrieve. And its all uphill from there! The cast of Outlaw Star

Review:
Wowie. Id been waiting for a long while to see this one, having been disappointed several times. But boy, was it worth the wait! Right from the opening song (which kicks serious ass, by the way) I could tell that this one had not only lived up to my expectations, but surpassed them. The story takes off with a bang and carries that momentum all through the series. One thing I was glad to notice is that even though our hero, Gene, does have an eye for women, he does not continually hit on every female member of the cast, and the entire female cast does not continually hit on him! The characters are fun and interesting to watch (Eisha is great comic relief), the animation is superb for a televison series, and the music fits perfectly. If you like high adrenaline sci-fi with a comedic twist, this is certainly up your alley. The only problem with this show is the agonizing cliff-hangers at the end of almost every episode. Since AnimeVillage only puts two eps per tape, you're gonna be strangling somebody, I guarantee it. Highly recommended.

Herself the Elf sez: This is one of my favourite series...for many reasons, but the biggest one is that the main character is NOT some dumb kid hero, it's a total hunk in a skin-tight black tank top! YEAH! Gene is the coolest and he knows it...a little too much sometimes, which makes it all the more funny when he occasionally screws up. There's also a great recurring character in Fred Luo, voiced by the inimitable Seki Toshihiko (Duo Maxwell, Shinobu Tezuka, etc.) who's always chasing after and lending money (at a huge interest rate) to Gene. ^_^
